Overview

The Freedom Shop, in collaboration with Wellington Zinefest, are raising funds to illustrate and release a series of zines that offer hopeful, radical viewpoints as we look to rebuild after COVID-19. This project has two goals:

1. To produce a series of radical zines (some new, some re-released texts) that offer critical and inspiring ideas.

2. To provide PAID work for illustrators and artists, especially those in the zine community, during this shitty time.

This fund will help support independent zinesters and artists to produce good work. These zines will be sold as cheaply as possible, distributed physically through The Freedom Shop and at Zinefest events, and made available online. Our base budget will allow us to produce four new and updated titles.

Put simply — the more we raise, the more zines we will be able to produce!

Confirmed titles include:

'Are we all New Zealanders now' by Ani Mikaere.

'Rongoa' by Wellington Rainforest Action Group

'The problem with white saviours' by Simone Kaho

‘Haiku from Lockdown’ by Various

‘The Tyranny of the Clock’ by George Woodcock

Budget:

$500 per title to pay for illustration and design. The Freedom Shop will cover printing costs. We will be putting out an open call for visual artists and designers to work on these zines. We are also absolutely open to content submissions and new zine ideas - please get in touch!

To stay up to date, please join The Freedom Shop’s mailing list, and/or Wellington Zinefest’s channels.

MORE MONEY MORE ZINES

Kia ora koutou,

A huge thank you to all of the supporters who have backed our boosted campaign — we hit our first goal already!!

Basically - this means we can produce a couple of high-quality radical zines, give work to a couple of illustrators and distribute it widely.

Our dream is to make MANY MORE ZINES in this way, which is why we have a stretch goal to hit ($3000).

The more we raise, the more zines we can produce and the more artists we can give work.

If you have a couple of bucks to support zinesters and radical views, now is the time to throw it in.

Ngā mihi nui,

-The Freedom Shop w/ WGTN Zinefest
