Frisky

OVERVIEW

Hello, we are Kawera Pictures and this is Frisky.

Frisky is a 10-12 minute short film that follows Mick, a reclusive farmer, and Anne, a free-spirited ‘towny’ as they are brought together by a cheeky sheep. We see their relationship evolve over the course of the film as Mick learns the importance of vulnerability and to ask for help. 

We are hoping to gain a substantial amount of our budget for this film from this crowdfunding campaign so that we are able to pay for a cast, transport, and animal wranglers that will help to bring this film to life.

We plan on screening this film in Wellington and Hawkes Bay where each donor is invited. We will also submit our film to the Show Me Shorts film festival and New Zealand International Film Festival.

We are a group of like minded individuals who respect each other's ideas, supporting one another as we go through this creative journey. It is imperative that we take into account our team's individual perspectives to make this film to the highest quality that we can deliver. We are about building people up and bringing out the best in one another. 

PROJECT

Our project intends on delivering an authentic piece that reflects the hardships and struggles of rural living alongside the importance of human connection and local communities. The main themes of the film are mental health, gender and human connection, studying how these all work in a rural environment.

We believe this is not only a great story to tell but one of great importance to New Zealand. Mental health is an ever increasing topic in rural communities and this hasn’t come out of nowhere. Men’s mental health, especially in rural New Zealand, has become more present due to people starting to talk more about their hardships and struggles. Our national identity regarding cinema has been often intertwined with a narrative of the man alone archetype, a stoic, lone wolf type who is usually in contention with a near omnipresent, oppressive force that is out to get him.

This goes as far back as Sleeping Dogs, Smash Palace and The Quiet Earth. We want to push against this notion of masculinity that has persisted not only in New Zealand media, but in our general culture.

IMPACT

This is honest, authentic and has no pretenses or romanticised ideals. It is a simple, straight down the line film that will appeal to a wide audience.

We hope that you might help us on our path to create this film for your consumption as this film is important. Not only as members of the arts community, friends or family, but as people of the country who want to see media that reflects you and the people around. Agriculture is one of, if not, the biggest industries in this country. The blood, sweat and tears that maintain it are often forgotten.
