Celebrating unsung theatre heroes: every two years, five behind-the-scenes practitioners receive $5,000 thanks to the generosity of Sir Roger Hall – recognising their vital, often unseen contributions to theatre.
Five unsung heroes of Aotearoa New Zealand theatre have been named as recipients of the 2025 Out of the Limelight Theatre Award, each receiving $5,000 in recognition of their vital contributions behind the scenes.
Established through the huge generosity of Sir Roger Hall and facilitated by The Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi, these biennial awards shine a light on all aspects of theatre across New Zealand, ensuring that all practitioners whose work is essential to the stage are celebrated.
“I set up the Out of the Limelight Awards to celebrate theatre practitioners whose work rarely gets the sort of recognition it deserves,” says Sir Roger Hall, whose fund also supports the Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Laureate Award for theatre.
From stage managers and set builders to technicians and wardrobe supervisors, the awards honour those without whom no production could happen – yet whose names are rarely in lights.
