Yellow - a Short Film
Bailey Gardner | Film
Overview
The Project
'Yellow' is a psychological drama, following three women in one family and their shared experience of intergenerational trauma. Namely, how they negotiate the burden of motherhood on youth with their personal ambitions, their expectations for life, and of each other.
'Yellow' follows Toni as she relays the events of one fateful night 14 years ago to her granddaughter Joey. Toni is a drummer, following a dream of youth, and one night after a gig, on the way home Toni and Joey's mother Loretta argue intensely. In the heat of the moment, Toni kicks her out of the vehicle. Later that night she disappears. The revelation of this truth threatens the fragile relationship between Joey and Toni, who are reconnecting after years of estrangement.
We aim to make something dark, dramatic, intense, visceral, taking tonal inspiration from the likes of David Lynch (Mulholland Drive, Twin Peaks), Denis Villeneuve (Arrival), and Darius Marder (Sound of Metal). Yellow however will be unique in its focus on female family relationships, young mums, and its villain: an abstract vision of panic, inspired by the work of Ralph Hotere and Kazimir Malevich.
Vital to this film is its theme of forgiveness: understanding that sometimes the people who hurt us the most are the ones that love us. Joey decides to forgive her grandmother, taking a step to break the cycle of grief and heal some of the trauma faced by the women in her family.
