Overview

Whammy Bar and The Wine Cellar are iconic and valuable community spaces - they are a platform for artist growth, for audience entertainment and valuable connection, they are rehearsal spaces, recording studios and gathering points for our community.  Without them the careers of so many of our beloved artists would not be where they are today.  But they are not money making businesses - they always run on a shoestring - and right now it's vital that we elevate their ‘value and viability' by raising awareness and a whole lot of funds to not only keep them afloat but help them adapt to our ever changing social landscape.

This is an artist-led project aimed at a viral response to support our community spaces to survive and thrive.

Here’s your chance to help. Anyone can do it – artists, audience members, reviewers, techies, promoters – all of us.  First up – please donate now – chip in what you can to make a difference. Next - using the hashtags #welovewhammywinecellar and #saveourvenues post your own video memory as a response and share this with your community along with the link to this page so that your friends can donate too.

About the campaign:

Venues across the country – particular small venues - are struggling to survive. These are the places and spaces where bands travel to play for you and where you head out to see live music.  Here in Auckland, two iconic New Zealand venues, The Wine Cellar and Whammy Bar, need our help to continue their invaluable work of being community spaces; places where we are all entertained by the amazing artists who call these venues home. These venues are owned, managed, and operated by people like you and me, they are not big businesses, and we can’t stand by and place the fate of our local music scene on the shoulders of one small handful of people. These are community spaces, and to keep them going will take a community effort.

This Boosted Campaign is to support Whammy Bar and The Wine Cellar  – two venues who have been instrumental in the cultivation of artists such as Marlon Williams, Aldous Harding, Nadia Reid, Tiny Ruins, Miss June, The Beths, Reb Fountain and so many more – without these venues our beloved kiwi artists would not have had the opportunity to flourish. Musicians have literally ‘grown up’ in these vital spaces. Award winning albums are recorded here, award winning artists rehearse and perform here. First time musicians, DJ’s and bands have the opportunity to share and develop their artistry here and many have gone on to become international successes because of the support these spaces offer. We need venues to grow talent as much as we need venues to be entertained The Wine Cellar and Whammy Bar to stay alive and thrive so that we can continue to experience the incredible talent of our musical community.

Music venues are not cash cows – they are no way deemed ‘viable’ businesses. And that’s because they don’t make money and they’re a hell of a lot of work. You run a music venue for the love of it; because you are passionate about live music and want to provide a space where your community can congregate to hear it .. there’s no money in it AND I’m going to let you in on a secret - running a venue costs shitloads, especially when your venue resides in central Auckland where rent is astronomical.

It may be a high price to pay to run a venue. But listen - the cost of loosing these venues is too great to bare.  We cannot afford to be idle - Whammy and The Wine Cellar are essential community spaces that provide an essential cultural service for audiences and artists alike.   We need them.

Whammy and The Wine Cellar are national treasures. We need to value them for what they are and stand up in solidarity to support them at this crossroads.

What do we want the future of our creative and cultural experiences to look like? If we want access to national and international artists, if we want to foster and support artist development, if we want to connect with our community and enjoy the rich musical traditions we hold so dear then we have to do our bit to save what we have and steer the course of our collective future.

This campaign is about providing a foundation for Whammy and The Wine Cellar to move forward with support – to create resiliency in a time of strife and to grow out of this anew. We will be calling on the music industry to come to the party wherever possible, from the big players to the punters - whoever you are, we need you. We are aiming to raise at least 50k in this campaign .. with hopes of raising much more. All monies raised will go towards operating costs and keeping these mighty ships afloat. We don’t know what the future of entertainment will look like but we do know it will change and we have to adapt with those changes. The money you donate will give Wine Cellar Whammy an opportunity to survive, develop and adapt so that they can meet the needs of artists and audiences alike – folks like us – who love need and want live music in your lives.

The Wine Cellar and Whammy Bar have value on so many levels. Donate, share your memories and share this campaign so we can raise enough to hold the fort and choose what we want for the future of music in Aotearoa.
