Overview

Java Dance Theatre is ready to return to the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year with their newest and most daring show yet. The Wine Project is a critically acclaimed dance theatre work about wine making, power and village politics.

The show is highly visceral with live music played by the cast of five dancers and musicians, set in a scintillating world of spice  and performed on a set of French wine barrels. A cellist tends the vines, a dancer crushes the grapes, and everyone ferments the juice. The Wine Project invites the audience into a sensual world of ritual and revelry. Delighted responses from festival audiences across New Zealand, including Wanaka, Invercargill, Nelson, Tauranga and Hawkes Bay have set the stage here, and we're ready to bring The Wine Project to new audiences on the other side of the world.

Thanks to the success of our New Zealand tour we are already part of the way there. We have received funding from Creative New Zealand towards some of the costs of taking The Wine Project to Edinburgh, but to bring it to full fruition we need your help. The Wine Project is bigger, brighter and even more delicious smelling than any of our other shows. We are seeking $10,000 to buy 5 barrels and 850 cinnamon sticks (we can't get them through customs!) and to accommodate a thoughtful cellist, a charismatic violinist and three enchanting dancers while they perform 32 shows. Join us in bringing this enticing show to Edinburgh!

"The audience's faces alight with pleasure, concern, regret, tension, understanding-  utterly enthralled with the mime and explosion of emotions in front of them. Yes, it has a story, but this is a dance of joy you feel to the extreme, a drama you know in your soul, a dark secret they share that you won't admit is yours." The Wine Project  Theatreview

Java Dance Theatre clambers into your senses and gets under your skin. We explore the boundaries of the unexpected. It's a sensory experience where the audience is essential. Our signatures are intense physicality, emotional engagement and audience immersion. The Wine Project does all this and more.

Your support large or small will make a real difference. The vines of this campaign are already growing. Please donate generously. Immerse yourself. We have 5 weeks to get there.
