Street Smart
Leigh Minarapa | Film
Overview
Homelessness is at increasing levels never imagined in New Zealand's history. We see them sitting on the sidewalks on our way to work, we see them sleeping under cardboard trying to keep warm on our way to the local cinemas, we see them roaming the streets, checking trash bins for food, or looking for a potentially warmer new sleeping spot. Although we see them everywhere, they are becoming INVISIBLE to many New Zealanders.
Due to the chronic rise of the number of homeless people over recent years, these people are becoming a number, another statistic.
What Street Smart aims to do is look beyond all this, at the person - something that people tend to forget. Street Smart investigates the life of Regina Tito, who after time on the streets and in other homeless situations, speaks of her experiences now that she has ended her cycle of homelessness. We will explore Regina's life from a humanistic point of view, ask the questions that homeless people never get a chance to answer.
Street Smart will remind people of the basics of what it means to be human - kindness, empathy, understanding.
With the use of Regina's voice-over she will guide us through her most poignant moments on the streets. We will visually explore the unique experiences of homeless people; a visceral overwhelming world filled with loud horns, crowds of feet walking by, over bearing buildings in the city.
The film will provide a raw and truthful undestanding of life on the streets that many people ignore.
We want to give these people an opportunity for their voices to be heard. That's where you can help. We need all the support and help that we can and we need to reach $2,000 to get this film made. Once we reach this target, Loading Docs will match that amount dollar by dollar.
We are a group of young filmmakers and this is our first short documentary. This subject is very close to our heart and we need people to know Regina's story. We want homeless people to have a place in our world.
Your donations and sharing of support will ensure that this film gets made, that these questions get answered, and that these people will always be seen in our society.
