Sparrow to hit the high notes at London's Guildhall
Sophie Sparrow | Music
Overview
My name is Sophie Sparrow and I'm a singer from Whangarei, Northland. My first stage role was a flea - I was 8 years old. Singing and performing has always been my dream, and later this year I am pursuing that in London, UK. I have an incredible opportunity to complete my Masters at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Guildhall has awarded me a part-scholarship to go towards tuition fees, and this year I've been fundraising for the remainder of my tuition fees and accommodation costs. This Boosted campaign will assist with covering some of those remaining expenses.
So, who am I?
I was 14 years old when the incredible Joan Kennaway (QSM) opened my eyes to the beauty of opera. I hired the DVD of The Magic Flute from the library and watched it countless times, putting my favourite scenes on repeat, I quickly became hooked.
I graduated from the University of Otago in 2014, with a Bachelor of Music in Classical Voice (first class honours) under the tutelage of Isabel Cunningham and Frances Wilson (ONZM), and in 2016 with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting.
Whilst performing throughout the country - Pamina in The Magic Flute, Barbarina in The Marriage of Figaro, with The Freemasons NZ Opera Chorus, attended the DMMF Opera Studies Courses, and performed with the APO at the NZ Aria finals - I've been training with Frances Wilson at the Auckland opera Studio.
Where to next?
After studying, singing and working throughout New Zealand, it's time for me to spread my wings and fly the nest. I've been given a chance of a lifetime to study at the top conservatoire in the UK. I can't wait to start.
The Guildhall Artist Masters is a two-year Masters programme designed to prepare young singers for the demands of the industry. Guildhall provides students with performance opportunities and a wide range of training in opera, language, and stagecraft.
Join me on my journey to London!
This is my biggest singing journey to date and I would love you to join me on this adventure. Thank you for helping me make my dream become a reality. Your continuing support is forever appreciated and I hope you enjoy this journey with me.
With love, Sophie x
