Overview

Established in 2018, the Six Degrees Festival, 2023, is supported by Victoria University of Wellington and provides pathways for students from the Master of Fine Art's (Creative Practice) in Theatre to become professional theatre makers. In January and February 2023, 7 Masters students will present 4 shows in celebration of their achievements and a years’ worth of learning in the MFA programme.

Who are we?

The 2023 Six Degrees Festival cohort consists of 7 MFA students with 4 different shows from immersive site-specific theatre to new Pasifika plays- this year’s festival is not to be missed!

  • Sharon Li presents Monkey, written by Lynda Chanwai-Earle and inspired by the famous Chinese tale: Journey to the West. Sharon is collaborating with the creator of Fun Creative Co; Rachel Coward, and a group of talented children; Myliee, Delta, Toby, Catriona, Emily, Timothy, Rita and Keya, to explore themes of bullying and racism.

  • Poe Tiare Tararo and Hannah Taylor present Raru e Maruakaita. Originating from the island of Mauke, one of the 15 islands of the Cook Islands, this legend follows the life of two siblings; Maruakaita and his younger sister Raru. It is a legend is of family, love, betrayal and grief.

  • Morgan Delaney, Lani Swann and Daisy Vahey Bourne present Timelines, an immersive, interactive work based around the history of BATS theatre, that will transport audiences back in time and ask them to help find their way back to 2023.

  • Ezra Seiuli Presents The Veil a new play documenting the navigation process of 4 Pasifika adolescents as they search for their safe haven.

Other people involved in the project are:

  • Producer and MFA Coordinator: Victoria University of Wellington Lecturer, Dr Kerryn Palmer
  • Marketing Director: Katie Hill

The MFA in Creative Practice hones leadership, collaborative, creative, and business skills over an intensive 12-month programme. It is an industry-focused, practical degree that focuses on enhancing skills needed to be a practising artist as well as encouraging new contacts and networks in Wellington’s creative industries.

Where will the money go?

The money raised from our Boosted campaign will fund costs for the festival as a unit. We do not want to ask the students to siphon off money from their own university allocated budgets to fund external festival costs. These festival costs will include:

  • A festival-wide flyer for distribution in the local Wellington area
  • A flat fee for a graphic designer
  • Catering and entertainment costs for an Opening Night Function

Please help support the emerging artist as they take a leap into the professional theatre industry!
