Overview
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Utilising the She is Not Your Rehab art gallery to facilitate talanoa creatively is the goal and objective for a series of creative workshops aimed at rangatahi that spoken word poet; Dietrich Soakai and the founder of She is Not Your Rehab; Mataio Brown have collaborated on to offer freely to high school aged young men in group facilitated sessions.
Currently She is Not Your Rehab receives countless requests from schools to facilitate something like this but often there is just not the funding to be able to deliver it.
This is a strengths based Kaupapa that successfully can still have meaningful kōrero around hard topics with positive Pasifika male models who have successfully broken cycles in their own lives. It promotes the mental well-being of our rangatahi and supports them in their own understanding of their identity and place in the world.
This is a creative, engaging, culturally relevant response to a huge need and demand for these type of conversations in the current craze of social media noise where rangatahi are easily influenced negatively by popular online personalities who promote unhealthy versions of masculinity alongside the objectification of women.
Every dollar you donate to our project until we reach our target will be doubled thanks to match funding from CNZ as part of the Boosted X Moana campaign.
Boosted is All-or-nothing, meaning we have to hit 100% to recieve the funds, so help make this happen!
ABOUT US
She is Tapu. She is Taonga. She is Whakapapa. She is Mana. She is Manawa. She is Ūkaipō. She is Kōrerō. She is Maunga.
These are just some of the responses from thousands of men from Aotearoa and many from the Ōtautahi community who answered the question: “If she is not your rehab, then who is she?”
In November 2022, She Is Not Your Rehab opened an art gallery in central Christchurch, NZ and a virtual gallery online which hosts the exhibition; Who is She? in collaboration with Tauranga graffiti artist Mr G (Graham Hoete); an acclaimed NZ graffiti artist. An art exhibition around domestic violence prevention, the online global submission process asked men for one affirming word to describe what the woman in their life meant to them. It was a chance for men to acknowledge their women; partners, wives, mothers, daughters. Only 100 submissions could be selected from the thousands. The chosen words were then turned into 100 individual artworks.
