The Collaborative Mural Project
Roimata Commons Trust | Visual Art
Overview
This Collaborative Mural Project is all about creating a sense of community & place.
About us.
Roimata Commons Trust have been working hard for 4 years now to enhance the natural beauty and utility of Radley Park through planting productive edible and medicinal plants, as well as native plants to reconnect the park with its natural past.
A new phase for Roimata.
We feel we are entering a new phase now, where it is time to introduce some other creative elements and involve the community in creating a mural to invite more of our community to feel welcome in the space, as well as celebrating the past, present and future of Roimata Food Commons.
A mural for the community, by the community.
The mural design has been created by a local Ōtautahi resident, Sandrine Line Marie, who has used simple iconography to communicate the taonga that have been present within the park's ecology, as well as what the community are adding now and in the future.
We are working with Natural Paint Co and will utilise their natural paints to eliminate the risk of chemical contamination, which aligns with our organic land management practices throughout the spaces that we have created.
The process.
The murals will be painted onto panels of plywood and secured to a fence structure which is being constructed by Smylie Builders. To eliminate chemical contamination, we'll use untreated timber. The painting of the mural will be done through a series of workshops, where the community will get to actively create the panels to go on display, under the watchful eye of, and in collaboration with, Sandrine. This gives our community a chance to contribute and learn at the same time.
The nitty gritty
The money we raise through this crowdfunding campaign will contribute to:
- The artists time and expertise as we feel it is important to value these;
- The materials - paint, brushes, timber, plants
- Project management - supporting the time and effort it takes to pull off a project of this nature...
A huge thank you.....

Project Updates
Thank you so much 🙏❤
Wow...thank you so much to all of you that have donated to creating the amazing mural that we have had designed by Sandrine Line Marie.
This project has been a slow burner....we have been working away at this for many months to get it to this point.
We are so lucky to be working with amazing people who really believe in what we are doing....and we are going to start the mahi this weekend!!!
We already have the plywood panels but they need to be trimmed down to 2m...a little sanding on the edges...then undercoat!!!
This is really important because we are using untreated timber to remove any potential toxicity leaching into the soil....and the paint is completely non toxic!! Yay!!
Keep an eye on our social media for updates as to how things are progressing....
Once again...thank you so much!!!
Much love...
Michael 🙏❤
