Pane Provocations

Pane Provocations translates to "provocations about sex" in Cook Islands Māori. A 90 minute theatre production, Pane Provocations follows the lives of 6 young Cook Islanders who's relationships bring revelations about sex and queerness.

Following development Breaking Ground 2022, Pane Provocations won runner up in Playmarkets b425 competition in 2023.

Pane Provocations is written by me, Teherenui Koteka. I was born and raised on the island of Rarotonga. After completing my college education at Tereora College in Rarotonga, I travelled to Wellington to study at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington where I have since graduated with my Bachelor of Arts and my Masters of Creative Writing.

I started writing Pane Provocations when I was 19 years old, I am now 24. Having grown up in Pacific community, I know that talking about sex is still a big taboo. I never got "the talk" and subsequently learnt the hard way that our communities lack positive sexual cultures. I think that theatre is a medium that gets our Pacific communities talking about topics we typically find akama (shameful.) Pane Provocations is my attempt at generating conversations around sex and sexuality so we can, as a community, build better sexual cultures. By supporting this campaign you are helping build these better cultures.

Pane Provocations will debut at BATS Theatre as a part of the 2024 Wellington Fringe Festival. Following its debut season, Pane Provocations will travel to the Cook Islands for the productions second season.

This Boosted campaign will support this body of work by paying for the casts return airfares to Rarotonga where they will perform the second season. Any funds raised beyond the funding target will be directed towards the costs of costuming and props.

With the total costs of this project exceeding $70k, the majority of which is directed towards paying the cast of 6 the CNZ recommended wage of $30ph, a donation as small as $5 is greatly appreciated.
