The Project

One Foot After The Other is a short documentary that explores how tramping has provided a space for young adults to push themselves and shape their outlook on life.

The Victoria University of Wellington Tramping Club has been providing an outdoor community to students for over a century. Through a friend group of the club’s committee members we learn how tramping plays an important role in young adults’ lives and how they feel about the world around them.

The Team

Kia Ora. I’m Yana, the Director of this short documentary. My biggest dream is to be able to travel the world and tell meaningful stories. This film is my shot at it. I have made many fictional short films before and since this is our last year of film school I wanted to capture a real story that all of us relate to.

Kia ora, I’m Roarna, the producer of One Foot After The Other. I’m in my third year of a Bachelor of Screen Arts at Massey University. I love producing, and although I’ve never produced a documentary before, I’ve loved it so far and I’m looking forward to seeing where this project goes. I’ve always loved the outdoors so I’m really excited to share this love through this film and inspire others to get outside.

We are also working with a small team of talented Massey University students who are key to making this documentary happen.

The Funding

We've had a tight shooting window for this film, so we're doing the fundraising thing in reverse. We're currently in production, and spending our own money on this film, so any money we raise here will go towards reimbursing us for what we've spent so far and funding the rest of the project as it goes into post production and eventually distribution. As students, and with a very small crew, we don't have much of our own money to put into this project, so we're hoping to raise enough money to cover the costs of making this film.

Our main costs are food for our crew on tramps, and fuel to get to remote road ends and back. As we move into post production, your support will help the film come together and ensure it can be shared with a wide audience.

Any donation over $5 made through Boosted qualifies for a 33% tax credit for New Zealand tax residents!

The Details

"I went to my first tramping club meeting, hands shaking, thinking maybe I shouldn’t bother them. It was my last chance to see that maybe there would be a story hiding in the very thing I dream making films about. So I went up to the committee members, stumbling over words.

“Would some of the club members be open to getting interviewed for a research project?”

They said yes.

When the crew and I came the following week to hold the interviews, the smiles and excitement that greeted us was almost unbelievable.

We had never met these people before. They showed us the gear shed. They showed us themselves, in the most pure way. They told us their passions, their fears and their stories. And we left at the end of the night all looking at each other and saying. There is a story. Right here. There is so much there.

The tramping club members are the loveliest people ever. For being so young they have so much to say, so much hope and love for each other. I think it is something that should be shared with the world, and something that will allow all of us to be grateful for the life we have."

The Impact

One Foot After the Other is a reminder to young people that the journey is the best part of life. It’s a message about the importance of community and an encouragement to make the most of the present before it is gone. It is an opportunity to promote the beauty of Aotearoa's landscapes and encourage people to get outdoors.

Most importantly, this film is a stepping stone towards the beginning of our filmmaking careers. This is our last project before we leave the comfort of university and we want to make it count.

One Foot After the Other is a short documentary about how tramping helps young people deal with uncertainties of life, and we hope it can provide guidance and inspiration to anyone going through change, regardless of their stage in life.
