Mask Making Workshop with Alfredo Iriarte
Emily Hurley | Visual Art
Overview
Who are we?
People who are passionate about masked theatre.
Many of the people behind this project are also actors who have had training in the manner of Jaques Le Coq and Commedia dell Arte.
What do we want?
We want to bring Alfredo Iriarte to New Zealand from Argentina so that he can conduct two workshops in July: one in the construction of Commedia masks, and the other in Expressive masks.
THE WORKSHOPS ARE OPEN TO ANYONE AND WE WANT TO MAKE IT AS ACCESSIBLE AS POSSIBLE!
Where is the money going?
We want to subsidize/give away workshop places to students, artists, and teachers who otherwise might not be able to afford it. We also need a bit of help to cover expenses such as visa applications and airfares.
Why mask making?
Masked theatre really does contain something special - masked shows from companys such as Indian Ink, Te Reiha and Mahuika theatre company have emerged as quite successful and auidences love it. However high quality theatrical masks are expensive.
For the actors in this project learning how to make our own masks for future shows is very exciting and a brilliant way to cut costs!
Alfredos craftmanship is also second to none - learning his techniques would be a golden experience for any Artist or Costumer.
Special thanks to Creative Communites who have already supported us with a grant which will allow us to cover the costs of mateirials and advertising.
