The Project

Kia ora, I am a local artist from Christchurch called Ghostcat and I want to re-create 30 iconic buildings that used to exist in pre-earthquake Christchurch and scratch-build part of that building; this could be a sign, a door, or a facade. These miniature artworks will be installed in their original locations around Christchurch for everyone to find and enjoy, like a memory treasure hunt!

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

In collaboration with Fiksate Gallery and Dr. Reuben Woods, we will create and publish a book that incorporates photographs of these scratch-builds in their original location, the process of building them, and information about the history of the original building. Once this project is completed, we aim to hold a book launch and exhibition of all the artworks created at Fiksate Gallery.

THE STORY

Earlier this year I had my first ever solo exhibition at Fiksate called ‘Shadow Town’ which showcased a collection of scratch-built miniature artworks ranging from urban buildings to everyday objects like skip bins and power poles, with one stand-out build of the now-demolished Volcano & Lava Bar in Lyttleton.

The response from the public blew my mind and the most wonderful thing about it was creating the nostalgia that connected with so many people that came through the gallery. The people and that experience have inspired me to create this project.

TO MAKE IT HAPPEN, YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED

The funds raised through this Boosted campaign will help cover the costs of creating all the scratch-built miniatures, the documentation of the artworks from process to installation, materials to keep these artworks secure and permanent, and finally to publish the book with my contributors. The remaining funds will contribute to the book launch and exhibition opening night.

HELP US PRESERVE THE MEMORY OF ŌTAUTAHI CHRISTCHURCH

Each iconic artwork and location I have chosen, through my own research or what my followers have suggested, has a unique history that is now hidden. I believe that creating a glimpse of the past through these scratch-builds, will give people an opportunity to experience the memories they may have had there.

While the new Christchurch city is being built up all around us, it is important not to forget the city we had, we loved and we lived in.

The funding I am asking for will help make this project come to life, and hopefully, all of the memories we hold of such iconic, but now lost, pieces of Christchurch city.

Thank you so much for your support!
