Final Girls Just Want To Have Fun

Final Girls Just Want To Have Fun is a 10 minute slasher/incel-horror short film that follows the titular Final Girl, as she grapples with the aftermath of the Masked Killer’s attack on her high-school ball. Dragged into flashbacks in the hours following, she must keep a keen eye out for the news that she is finally safe. 

The film explores themes of autonomy, misogyny, and the 'male gaze'.

We are fundraising to help with costs of paying the talented actors, feeding the wonderful crew, getting sick props and costumes, and future festival funds.

Final Girls Just Want To Have Fun is being made by a group of talented young filmmakers, all of whom are recent graduates or current students of Massey National Academy of Screen Arts. The film is led by women in head of department roles.

Final Girls Just Want To Have Fun aims to explore the effects of men’s assumed entitlement to women’s bodies, and the ways the effects of it lingers; following us home, refusing to let us feel peace with ourselves and in our bodies.

The film explores how Final Girl, the protagonist, actually feels. The fear, the excitement, the lingering paranoia afterwards.

The aim is to explore how women can be depicted with an emphasis on her experience rather than her appearance, by analysing, recreating, and attempting to subvert the unconscious ‘male gaze’ found in slasher films.

More than that, however, is the desire to create a really bloody good film, with all the blood, guts, tension and spectacle found in great slashers.

Final Girls Just Want to Have Fun comes from a deep love of horror.

Growing up on seminal works like Halloween (1978), Carrie (1976), and Scream (1996), created an appreciation and obsession for the genre - except for the fact that I could never relate to any of the women in these films.

Throughout history, cinematography has historically been a male-dominated field, leading to women not having a say in how we are shown and represented in cinema. This has caused a disconnect between the women in the audience and the women on screen - the idealised, objectified woman of the male gaze has nothing in common with the real woman watching.

The film aims to bridge that gap. Let us be bloody, and messy, and horrified, or perhaps even horrifying, but most of all, let us decide what that may look like.
