The Project
Ew Chucky! is a 10 minute thriller short film made as a part of Massey’s third year major projects. During a party Chucky must break into a flat, but things begin to turn when she finds something squirming on the ground.
This film focuses on themes of self-expression, navigating friendships in your early 20’s and what it truly means to go after what you want.
The Team
Ew Chucky! is made by a team of third year students at Massey University. For most of us, it's our final year at uni and we want to make the most of it, and this film is our way of doing that. Our main team consists of Mary Maughan (writer/director), Roarna Knowler (producer), and Jean-Marc Varnier (cinematographer), but we're working with a group of incredibly talented people who are helping this film come to life.
The Funding
We're raising money so that we can make this vision come to life, and make the most of our final year at uni! By donating, you're helping us:
- Feed our cast and crew on set
- Pay our incredible actors
- Secure the perfect location (and dress it)
- Get this film seen by the world
Any donations over $5 are tax deductible in New Zealand, so you get 33% back, and you'll get a thank you in the credits!
The Details
This project has developed and changed over the past year. It originated from something that truly had happened to me - leaving my bag in the wrong flat at a party. This somewhat embarrassing experience sparked an idea for a short film. I’ve also been inspired by Shirley Jackson’s gothic short stories, I feel that Ew Chucky! reflects her dark themes.
Ew Chucky! will explore the feelings of social anxiety and isolation that young adulthood often brings us. We are aiming to tell this story through a distinct visual style that will envelope our audiences. With a whirring, alienating party upstairs to the dark and unsettling downstairs, Chucky must delve into the unknown to pave the path toward self discovery.
The Impact
Ew Chucky! encompasses the feeling of difference in early adulthood. I want to encourage people not to turn away from these things and instead embrace it. Chucky must learn that her power doesn’t lie in social skills or popularity, but within her self-expression.
Isolation is prevalent in today's world. This film aims to reflect this issue and connect audiences through these experiences of embarrassment. I think narratives told through a female lens are particularly important. There is often something deeper and unspoken in women friendships, and I want to replicate these feelings.
Ew Chucky! focuses on a female perspective as I have found women’s stories of self discovery inspiring.
