Dog
Wolfgang Creative | Theatre
Overview
A dog-gone comedy. Literally.
War veteran Neville is intent on paying a tribute to his dog that would be befitting of any of his good mates. Unfortunately, he can't get his hands on a cannon to initiate a 21-gun salute. So instead, he is doing the next best thing, by playing the decaying corpse its favourite song 21 times before he puts him in the ground. But it's taking ages, and Nev's boarder Olivia and her rejected admirer Warwick find themselves walking an emotional tightrope to sensitively fast-track getting the dog buried.
DOG is a bittersweet, enchantingly endearing black comedy about an old man's love for his best friend.
From the folks who brought you The Lonesome Buckwhips, Wolfgang Creative, in association with The Basement, are proud to present the world premiere of DOG by Ben Hutchison.
Directed by Jeff Szusterman
Starring Mick Innes (Echo Point, Super City, Zen Dog, Hounds), Gareth Williams (Apollo 13, A Basement Christmas Carol, Spartacus) and Shavaughn Ruakere (Shortland Street, Sione's Wedding).
We need your help
The eponymous Dog of our show may be dead but he is an essential part of the play. Thanks to Creative New Zealand and Auckland Council we are debuting the play at The Basement Theatre 19-30 August. But, getting a puppet made from scratch is proving to be an expensive undertaking and we'd really like some help bringing him to life, er, to death. We also need to source a cannon, a record player, a chilly bin, a fridge, a Guy Mitchell LP, among other things, so you'd be helping us out with our whole props list!
About the creative process:
Our talented props maker is Rick Cave who holds Bachelors of Media Arts in Moving Image from Wintec majoring in Production Design. He also also has a certificate in Jade and hard stone carving certificate from Tai Poutini polytechnic. Rick has been carving jade for 13 years and working in art direction since 2013. You may have been lucky enough to see his recent debut as a production designer for a theatrical experience called "Giving Up" by Ant Glyph at The Vic in Devonport.
