BLACK FAGGOT
Multinesia | Theatre
Overview
It's not easy being young, gay and Samoan - especially when God and your mother are watching.
Black Faggot is award-winning playwright Victor Rodger's response to the debate over New Zealand's same-sex marriage bill. Victor saw young people marching in a Destiny Church rally against gay marriage and thought, "at least one of those kids will be gay and feeling quite wretched about himself." The result is a series of hilarious and poignant monologues grappling with the challenges faced by young, gay men growing up in Auckland's immigrant Polynesian communities.
Black Faggot was the runaway hit of the 2013 Auckland Fringe Festival, winning five awards including the inaugural "Tiki Tour Ready" award, which took the show to the Melbourne Fringe Festival. There it won two more awards, going on to Brisbane's World Theatre Festival and returning to sold-out seasons and rave reviews at the NZ Festival in Wellington and at Auckland's Herald Theatre.
Now we're taking the show global. Black Faggot has been selected for the New Zealand season at Edinburgh in August 2014. We're one of a dozen shows and 200 Kiwi artists proudly representing our culture on the world stage.
Black Faggot will be featured in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival at the prestigious Assembly Roxy theatre. The Fringe is the largest performing arts festival in the world, with 3,000+ shows and an audience of 4 million. It's an extraordinary opportunity to develop new audiences and meet New Zealand producers, promoters and presenters.
We've received generous support from Creative New Zealand to help cover travel costs, but we still need to pay for expenses like venue hire, marketing and publicity, artist fees, accommodation and meals. Your support is critical to our success. Every donation, large or small, makes a huge difference.
" launches the turbo-charged hilarity of superior sketch comedy into a poignant and humane plea for tolerance." The Age - Melbourne
