The Project
Becoming Her is a story about resilience and self-discovery. At first glance, it’s about Wren, a 25-year-old woman lost on a mountain after a fall. But beneath the surface, it’s about the moments when we all feel disoriented, unsure of our footing as we face the challenges of growing up and stepping into an unpredictable world.
Though made within a student context, this project is driven by the same care, ambition, and creativity as any professional film. Our focus is to bring Wren’s journey to life in a way that feels real, raw, and deeply human, inviting audiences to see a piece of themselves in her struggle and her becoming.
Our crowdfunding campaign exists to bring Becoming Her to life, supporting the final stages of production and post-production, while also inviting an audience into the story’s heart. This film explores identity, disorientation, and the journey of becoming oneself. By backing it, supporters aren’t just funding a project; they’re joining us in amplifying a story that reflects the struggles many face when confronting who they are and who they might become.
The Team
Kia ora! We are the three-person team behind Becoming Her.
Hi! I’m Emily, the director of Becoming Her. I originally wrote this script as a way to honour my younger self and reflect on the unpredictable paths life can take us on. I wanted to capture the relatability of growing up as a young girl in a world that often feels overwhelming. I hope you enjoy the film and feel the passion that’s been woven into every part of it.
Hi, I’m Ruby and I am the Producer for Becoming Her! After spending a semester focusing on my love for writing and acting, I decided to challenge myself to be organised for once. As someone with an affinity with the coming of age genre, this project's exploration of nostalgia and self reflection really connected with me. I can’t wait to foster a community for this deeply relatable film.
Hi, I’m Hannah, the cinematographer of Becoming Her. I’ve been working on films since high school and love it very much, so I am honored to get the chance to work on this project! After focusing mostly on screenwriting and editing for my past work, I’m really thrilled to finally focus on camerawork for this project and hone these skills with such a sweet and endearing script.
The Funding
While we have self-funded previous short films, this assignment has a few more monetary requirements. Your donations will help us to...
- Pay our actors (who will climb literal mountains)
- Purchase a high-quality SD card to store our footage
- Purchase props (like 4 identical lockets) and costumes (that we can cover with dirt and fake blood)
- On that note, purchase fake blood
- Fund travel costs
- Feed our lovely cast and crew
- Pay for festival entry fees
Any amount is extremely helpful and greatly appreciated!
The Details
Becoming Her follows Wren, a 25-year-old woman whose solitary hike in a treacherous mountain range takes a brutal turn after a fall leaves her disoriented and stranded on an unfamiliar ledge. As she stumbles down the mountainside in search of safety, the physical challenges twist into something far stranger, hallucinations of herself at different ages and turning points in her life. From the fearless child who once believed she could do anything, to the guarded teenager desperate to fit in, each “version” becomes both an obstacle and a guide. Along the way, these manifestations push Wren to confront her fears, reclaim her resilience, and rebuild trust in her own instincts.
This film was born from a desire to explore identity and self-worth through a deeply visual and emotional lens. In a world that constantly shapes and reshapes who we think we should be, Becoming Her is about stripping back the noise, facing the versions of ourselves that have defined us, and finding the strength to rise again—this time, on our own terms.
The Impact
Would teen-you be happy with who you are now?
Would 6-year-old-you greet you with a smile?
If you came across yourself, what would you think?
If these questions resonate, this film is for you.
This film is a coming-of-age story that will resonate with everyone, but as an all-female team, we hope that women, especially, find that connection. Meeting expectations, fulfilling your potential, and staying on track, all while being true to yourself, is a pressure that many women feel the weight of. With this film, we dare to dive into the discomfort of this pressure, while providing a catharsis that feels thematically realistic and visually interesting.
