The Project
Over the last 6 or so years The Verlaines have partnered with a small U.S. record label called Schoolkids Records to release limited edition runs of albums from their back catalogue. Some of these albums have never before been released on vinyl, so it's really gratifying to see this happen. The pressing numbers are small with the aim of breaking even. We have engaged the services of reknowned mastering engineer Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios in London. Frank has achieved brilliant results and taken the band's recordings to another level. We love his work.
The Team
The Verlaines are a band well known to many in New Zealand. We are still largely Dunedin based, but we work with industry stalwart Stephen Judge and his North Carolina based Schoolkids Records so we can make our reissues available not just in New Zealand, but to our fans around the world.
We work with a small team to reissue back catalogue recordings that date back to the beginning of the 1980's, comprising some 10 albums and other miscellaneous singles and E.P.s.
The Funding
We will be using funding to finance remastering of back catalogue recordings and associated artwork for the release. Production and distribution of physical product is not part of this funding process as this will be covered by our record company.
The Details
We are preparing another release for 2026 and want Frank at Abbey Road to remaster the original recordings, but we also have some demos that haven't seen the light of day. We'd like to share these recordings with the world. We also need to recreate the orginal artwork utilising the services of our digital creator.
The Impact
As much as anything this project serves to preserve more of The Verlaines recording output and the songs of Graeme Downes using 2025 audio technology in a state of the art recording studio, the legendary Abbey Road.
Many of The Verlaines' recordings have remained out of print for many years and this is another step towards making more of them available to fans again.
