The Project
What started out as a small idea on the 1970s Dawn Raids grew into something bigger than anticipated. I was blessed to sit in spaces with people who had experienced a thing or two in regards to NZ history. Next thing you know I'm making my first documentary. What we were able to achieve with the little we had is something I think worthy of sharing. We learnt about the formation of gangs in NZ, and what led us there. We also learnt what was happening within the police at the time from an inside source. Attaining these stories really was a gift. So here we are.
Our hopes are to gain a small amount of financial support to assist in,
- Licensing archival footage
- Post-production so we can finish things properly.
The Team
Hools - Director (Banana Boat Records)
Karima Faiai - Director of Photography (Lone Stag Films, Tagata Pasifika)
A good friend or two who've championed us from the beginning. Thank you.
The Funding
- Archival Footage Licensing: Ngā Taonga, British Pathé etc hold the rights to key historical footage we’d love to include.
Post-Production: Sound design, colour grading, and all the finer details.
- Music: If the stars align (and the budget stretches), we’d love to approach the Jimi Hendrix estate for the rights to use, “Hey Joe” or “All Along the Watchtower”.
The Details
I had the privilege of sitting down with a few of the who's who of the century. They shared special things with us, really more than what I expected. The filming’s done. The interviews are complete.
- Now we’re raising a few extra dollars for:
- Archival footage licensing
- Post-production
- We've got the main parts finished, there's now just a lot of empty black screens in between and over kōrero where I envision effective B-Roll footage will go.
The Impact
The people we interviewed have a mana of their own. They don't need us to tell their story. Nonetheless we are very fortunate they wanted to share a part of it with us.
My hope is this documentary will do them proud and also contribute to the shared knowledge of things in regards to what has helped shape the course of Aotearoa’s social conscience.
