THE RACE – A SHORT ANIMATED FILM

"The Race" is a short animated film presented as a fictional documentary, offering a fresh take on the classic Hare and Tortoise story. This project investigates what truly happened before, during, and after the iconic race by interviewing various animal witnesses. Set in the unique landscape of Aotearoa, New Zealand, the film features conversations with both native New Zealand animals and those brought to its shores. Through their perspectives, we uncover that the Hare, often perceived as lazy, was actually fast, impulsive, and potentially neurodivergent – simply misunderstood. The narrative explores how society subsequently shaped the story to praise the "slow and steady" approach, inadvertently demonising speed and individuality. Told with humour and warmth, and imbued with a distinct New Zealand feel, "The Race" challenges the original fable's lesson. It delves into deeper ideas about exclusion, unfairness, and the collective memory of events. More than just a reinterpretation, this film critically examines how dominant narratives are formed and how easily dissenting voices are overlooked.
