Maggie Covell
Kia ora,
I am currently an MFA student via Dunedin School of Art. My research project "Hidden in Plain Sight" centres on mental health and body autonomy issues for; individuals who identify as female within NZ society. The project is split into working phases which include participation activities with members of the public as a means to create temporary communities, which is seen as cultural experience that places high social value as a tangible benefit.
Prior to this project I was a co-founder of a Dunedin based art collective Glorybox which operated from 2013 - 2017 independently running pop-up galleries, exhibitions and events with a focus on live performance, and found spaces. I have also worked for a community arts centre in Rotorua, The Arts Village trust from 2018 - 2020 where my role was as community liaison with a focus around volunteer coordination. During this time I also worked as part of a funding assessment panel for Creative Communities Scheme Rotorua. I also have a range of illustrated books which are sold online via my website and in several Museums and Galleries nation wide around NZ.
Education wise I studied at Otago University from 2010 - 2014 and have a BA [Double Major in Art History and English Lit] and an Honors degree in Art History, in 2017 I studied at Toi Ohomai Institute at the Mokoia campus [Rotorua] and received a Grad Dip in Creative Entrepreneurialism. In 2020 I received a Post Graduate Certificate in Visual Art [with Distinction] from the Dunedin School of Art.
