Taupō Hau Rau short film

Taupō Hau Rau is a short film grounded in kōrero passed down by my Ngāti Tūwharetoa elders and in particular my koro and kaumātua, Napa Otimi. Created with longtime collaborators in Te Ao Māori filmmaker Corinna Hunziker, James Webster and Shayne P Carter—the important arts project brings together cultural knowledge and contemporary Māori artistic practice. At its heart, Taupō Hau Rau is a personal story—of loss, resistance, persistence, and mana. Rooted in the story of Taupō, my birthplace, it explores how movement, memory, and whenua are deeply interconnected. Inspired originally by a live dance created from knowledge that our koro Napa has shared with us. This 12-minute film honours and carries forward these stories in a new form. Blending dance, sound, and storytelling through a Te Ao Māori lens, the film will be created and presented locally at marae in support of our ongoing journey of cultural revitalization in Taupō, while also sharing our living stories with the world.
