About the show:
A captivating integration of contemporary dance and theatrical storytelling. Set to the electric melodies and guttural drums of ‘Pink Floyd’ comes an exploration of the human desire to resolve things in absolutes. The search for black and white unravels in grey, ‘lines of categorisation’ bend — giving way to the ‘circular’. Nuance is infinite. “Up and down, and in the end, it's only round and round, and round” — Floyd.

Holly Finch
Artistic statement:
I am deeply passionate about storytelling, music, and collaboration. My practice is rooted in a diverse range of dance styles and creative methods—and the endless ways these can intersect through a contemporary lens. I call upon character and narrative to build worlds that are intellectually engaging, emotionally resonant, and reflective of the nuance within our human experience. I believe in building 'tangible scaffolding' from which abstract, metaphorical, philosophical, and political commentaries can emerge.
Bio:
Holly is a Tāmaki Makaurau / Whangaroa based dance artist whose professional experience spans stage, screen, and immersive performance, including works by Crystal Pite, Hannah Tasker-Poland, Tegan Jeffery-Rushton, Bella Wilson and ‘WOW’ (World of Wearable Art) show. She has appeared in Lorde’s music videos Solar Power and Mood Ring, and as a choreographer, her work has featured in multiple Tempo Dance Festivals, in international film, and in community initiatives such as ‘Taking Dance to the People’ by DANZ. She has been supported through residencies at Wellesley Studios and the Tūrama Choreographic Residency, and funded by Creative New Zealand and the Peacocke Dance Trust to create new work. Holly believes art is the colour to our existence, offering us a pathway to connect to our shared humanity.

The Details

A title and a work shaped by observations of the human desire to categorise, define and resolve things - in absolute terms.
Draw a freehand line in the sand—it will never be perfectly straight.
Precision eludes the human hand, just as certainty largely eludes the human condition.
In today’s discourse, we seem to crave black-and-white answers, leaving little room to acknowledge nuance: the subtle complexities that exist in everything, everywhere, always.
It is possible for two seemingly opposing philosophical ideas to ring true:
“More is lost by indecision than wrong decision.”
“If you’re not sure, wait until things are clear and plain.”
These aren’t contradictions—they’re context-dependent truths. Perhaps the willingness to engage with nuance is what brings us closer to objective ‘truth.’
There’s also something to be said about extremes.
Opposites, when observed closely, often mirror one another.
Consider:
Water — whether boiling or frozen, its touch shocks the senses.
Ideologies — communism and fascism, positioned as opposites, yet when enacted by humans, often manifest in strikingly similar ways.
From this, the value of the middle emerges—the space in between.
The grey.
If the Earth is round, perhaps everything within it follows suit.
Life loops, cycles, returns.
There is no clear beginning or end.
Nothing entirely absolute.
The Impact
Through the integration of contemporary dance, theatricality, and an iconic soundtrack (Pink Floyd), yes and also no, subject to xyz, fine print applies invites a broad audience to engage with themes that resonate deeply within our current social and political landscapes.
In today’s climate where 'cancel culture' and extreme polarisation are prominent... acknowledging nuance, valuing media literacy, and taking the time to engage in deep research and critical thinking before arriving at any conclusion feels more important than ever.
The work offers audiences an opportunity to reflect on the multidimensionality of being human
