The Project
The Silver Slipper is a musical-theatre-infused cabaret designed to deliver a fun, scandalous, and emotionally charged night for Pōneke patrons. While the show revels in the glitter, sensuality and mischief associated with traditional cabaret. Its narrative centres on the importance of chosen family, the people who hold us through chaos, celebrate us through joy and offer belonging when the world feels unpredictable. Through bold live vocals, character-driven comedy, dance and theatrical storytelling, the production creates an immersive musical theatre experience wrapped inside the intimacy of a late-night speakeasy.

The Details
The narrative explores a group of heightened, outrageous, and deeply human wāhine who rely on their chosen whānau when confronted with personal or collective uncertainty. Moments of scandal and spectacle sit alongside moments of sincerity revealing that behind every dramatic flourish there is a heartbeat. Through character arcs and musical numbers audiences witness how performers lift one another up, tease each other through the hard moments, and celebrate the messy beauty of being part of a community. In this way the show’s decadence is underpinned by emotional truth.
The Impact
The kaupapa of The Silver Slipper is grounded in the understanding that cabaret has always existed in conversation with its era. Historically, cabaret thrived during periods of social upheaval, political tension and shifting cultural identities. It became a place where performers and audiences could escape, critique, laugh and express themselves more freely than the world outside allowed. In this same spirit, The Silver Slipper mirrors the complexities of modern life in Aotearoa. We live in a moment defined by rapid change, redefined identities and an ongoing search for community. The show responds to this by offering a space where humour, vulnerability and theatricality blend to create catharsis and connection — just as cabaret did during its golden age.
