The Project

A short film about a young couple whose relationship is hanging by a thread... because they can't agree on groceries. The Lot is a 10 minute drama-comedy short film with quick-pacing and montage elements. It’s set in one location: a local grocery store and the parking lot outside.

The Team

Elaina Lim

Kia Ora! I’m Elaina, a third year Screen Arts student at Massey University, and writer/director of The Lot

I wrote this short film in response to how easy it is to lose sight of our relationships and become caught up with appearances amid a self-obsessed world.

The film is a comical narrative that pokes fun at miscommunication and microaggression, and ends (literally) in a big mess. I hope audiences are able to share a laugh and see a bit of themselves in the characters: whether it’s the cashier who’s just trying to make it through his shift, or the partner who’s completely had it with their relationship.

This will be my first time directing a short film at this scale, and I’m excited to be leading such a talented and committed crew.

Anna Nakano-Broers

Hello, my name is Anna, I am a third year Screen Arts student at Massey University.

I’ve always found interest in having a big preparation role in films, hence why I am the co-producer & 1st AD for the short film The Lot. I tend to gravitate towards stories with some sort of complex characters or relationships and loved the script immediately. I hope that creating this film can bring out emotions from our audience in the way it intends, and be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Ben Ainsley

Greetings, I'm Ben Ainsley a third year Massey University Screen Arts student and I'm the lead producer for the short film 'The Lot'.

When watching the pitches for this film I already saw the comedic and character potential that many other films either; one took too seriously or two failed to meet realistic expectations of funding and theoretical logistics. Because of the pitch presented I knew I had to join the team! Although I hadn't done the producer role on a scale like this, I believe that this film is a perfect opportunity for the cast and crew to shine as future creators in the screen arts space.

Although overlooking this team of people will be a big step up from my other roles in films, I believe that this team has the potential to do wonders on this project!

The Details

The Lot is a 10 minute drama-comedy short film with quick-pacing and montage elements. It’s set in one location: a local grocery store and the parking lot outside.

The film follows Riley and her boyfriend Jay, as they attempt to purchase snacks for a party. However, their arrogance and lack of communication turns a simple task into the unraveling of their relationship.

What follows is ten minutes of chaotic frustrations, a crashout in the parking lot, and the messy end to a relationship.

In creating this short film I hope to connect with audiences. I want viewers to feel the tensions, embarrassments, and downright laughable nature of the plot. I hope this can be a film where audiences can relate to the characters and partake in the poking-fun aspect for themselves.

And, for a number of people in the crew, this is their final project before graduating from Massey University. I aim to realise an impactful, funny, polished film that we can all be proud of and share to a wider community.

The Impact

By contributing to this film, you are showing your support for a new generation of filmmakers, storytellers, and artists hoping to make a mark in Aotearoa's creative industry.
