The Details
Strays, written by Pan Clark, is a feminist eco-thriller dystopian play, part of the Six Degrees Festival at BATS Theatre, debuting from 3rd-6th of December. Strays is set in a futuristic world with controlling soldiers called ‘watchers’ and where history, literature, culture and art are on the brink of extinction. It explores a future world where human life is scarce and nature has reclaimed the Earth. One individual watcher is sent out to track down an eco-terrorist, Lorna Gold. Inspired from the current political climate, Strays is a warning of what might become of us if this human-led path to destruction continues.
Strays is part of the 6 degrees festival and a part of our study as Master of Fine Arts students. Nathan Arnott's research through this piece aims to priorities the audience. Using the visual aesthetic, soft apocalypse, Nathan and their design team aim to create a familiar space through an abstract set, and show its deterioration over time and the environment. An unsettling reality of the fall of humanity due to overconsumption. Their goals also involve sustainability as a lead focus in the sourcing and recycling of the materials used in this project.
Ella Ford's feminist directing process includes sharing the power gained as a director to uplift and empower the cast and crew. What she hopes to achieve is a rehearsal space where everyone feels safe and comfortable to share their ideas and concerns without fear of judgment. She hopes that this will spark meaningful conversations about the current unjust and destructive social and government systems around the world, and what will become of humanity if we fail to change our ways. She also hopes that her collaborators will take on feminist leadership practices and use them in all aspects of their community to create fairer workplaces and rehearsal spaces that priorities the use of visual aesthetics to influence how the ideas of the show will be perceived by people, rather than economic gain.
The Impact
These donations will be vital in supporting these artists and to make sure that the New Zealand arts scene fosters a culture of feminist safe spaces and environmentally sustainable practices.
That is the goal of Fragmentum Productions: to impact the arts scene in Wellington for the better. Making shows that have deep and meaningful contributions, not only in the story's that are put on but also in the way we conduct our spaces and the environmental impact we have.
We also have a diverse range of practitioners in our cast and crew that we pride ourselves on giving voices to in the theatre scene.
