The Project
"Sins of the Father" is a powerful short film about a boy named Ariki who escapes into a dream world to cope with the trauma of an abusive home. There he becomes a samurai and battles monstrous versions of his pain including his own father. But to truly heal he must learn to fight not with rage, but with clarity. This is a story about generational trauma, inner strength and the quiet power of choosing peace over violence. Visually rich and emotionally grounded, it blends fantasy action with deep and personal storytelling.

The Details
Sins of the Father is a short film that blends emotional storytelling with stylised action and dreamlike imagery, a coming-of-age story told through the lens of a young boy who becomes a warrior in his own imagination to survive the chaos of his home life.
This is a deeply personal story. We believe it will resonate with many people across Aotearoa, particularly those who have experienced hardship and young people who might be going through their own challenges. The world we’re building is inspired by anime, martial arts cinema and grounded in New Zealand identity.
We’re not just making this to entertain but to also send a message.

The Impact
Sins of the Father isn’t just a film, it’s a reflection of what many people in New Zealand go through but rarely talk about. It's about the kind of hurt that hides behind closed doors and the quiet strength it takes to grow beyond it.
This story speaks to anyone who’s ever felt overwhelmed, unseen or stuck in a world they didn’t choose. It’s for the young ones who feel like they have to fight their way through life and for the adults who still carry those childhood battles in silence.
Backing this project means more than funding a short film. It means backing young voices, cultural identity, mental health and the power of film to connect people.
If you believe in storytelling from the heart, if you want to support homegrown talent or if you just want to see more honest, visually rich stories coming out of Aotearoa, we’d be honoured to have your support.
