Rāpaki Marae

This unique Aotearoa/Austria project will involve a workshop led by Ariana Tikao at Rāpaki Marae (Ngāti Wheke), just out of Lyttelton. This Boosted development fund includes our stay at the marae.

the first PORTAL (2018)

PORTALS was imagined and opened in 2018.

It was winter, Wellington, and I was dreamy of a city where a gig would lead through to another, where you could pass through little microcosms of contemporary music from one venue to the next.

Here is a poster for the first portal, all those years ago...

Please consider sharing our campaign to make PORTAL: Anna Koch fly!

composer feature: Dylan Lardelli

For this project, I wanted to commission one of my very favourite composers.

Dylan Lardelli is amongst New Zealand's very finest – his music is balanced and exquisite.

One thing I love is how the form of his music unfolds. Consider this string quartet, performed by players of the legendary Klangforum Wien – I never feel lost and exhausted, I feel lost and led through the colour.

Dylan has a busy international calendar, upcoming projects include performances at Konzerthaus Berlin, Lübeck Musikhochschule, Musikfabrik Cologne and Mostra Sonora Suece Valencia.

composer feature: Ariana Tikao

The other composer I wanted for this project is another incredibly special artist.

Ariana Tikao is recognised as one of Aotearoa's most important artists. She has collaborated with the who's who in the New Zealand art scene and has been recipient of numerous accolades, including being awarded as Arts Foundation Laureate 2020.

Ariana's work spans disciplines and cultures with incredible knowledge and sensitivity. Her musicality is wairua that you feel when she performs.

Consider the work Manaaki, created together with Phil Brownlee for the New Zealand String Quartet and selected as finalist for the 2022 SOUNZ Contemporary Award, Te Tohu Auaha. The work is an unravelling of western classical and taonga puoro vignettes, the sharing of music and story.

COMPOSER FEATURE: REUBEN JELLEYMAN

Kia ora koutou. Ariana here. Thanks so much to all of our supporters so far.

I met Reuben last year at the APRA Silver Scrolls where we were both finalists for the SOUNZ Contemporary Award, which Reuben won! I was really happy that he received the award for his remarkable piece Catalogue. It seemed like a fitting homecoming as he’d just returned home from his post-graduate study at the Conservatoire de Paris. I was thrilled when I was approached by Reuben to be a part of this PORTAL project working alongside Reuben, and Dylan, with Anna Koch. You can read more about Reuben below on Elizabeth Kerr’s Five Lines blog which includes a link to Catalogue. I really feel that Reuben was born to be a composer, and he is the one who has worked tirelessly for this project to come to life. He mihi nui ki a ia!

50+ patrons!

We are so thrilled with the incredible support that we have received so far. It's been quite a ride, but we've got some way to go to get from 33% => 100%

We've got 8 days and we believe it is possible.

Please share our project! We want people to know that they can be patrons of art in Aotearoa and be a part of the solution to the lack of public funding.

PORTALFEST 2019 (some nostalgia)

In 2019 the PORTALS took on their own festival. We did it on a shoe-string budget, but we were able to get through just.

Here's the poster for some nostalgia: such a special line-up, never to be repeated.

Four years later, we are putting something together just as exciting. We are so glad to have you all part of the next adventure! Please share our project on social media or with any friends who you think might be interested in it. Let's go from 50% +> 100%

T -4 hours @ 71% !

Kia ora koutou

We're almost there. Just a couple of hours left and sitting at 71% – feeling very hopeful!

It's not too late for a last push if you want to help us get through the final stretch.

Otherwise – see you at the other side.
