The Project
Oh My Blob! is a queer comedy-horror that explores the chaotic and awkward side of teenage romance. Our protagonist, Elliot, struggles to confess to her high school crush and turns to an unearthly being for advice. However, as we go deeper into the night, Elliot slowly realises this creature may not have her best interest at heart. With a voice ringing in her head, filling her with doubts, she quickly loses sight of herself and her confidence. This student-led short film revolves around the themes of identity and self-confidence while exploring the internal battle within oneself.
The Team
Our team consists of third-year screen production students from AUT and rising professionals who are all eager to create stories and bring them to life. We’re a creative group who are excited to step out of our comfort zones while creating a fun, uplifting environment, surrounded by like-minded individuals.
Our director, Athena Preston, is a self-proclaimed DIVA with a passion for fashion, performing and dance, particularly in freestyle hip-hop and vogue. She’ll be bringing the energy and aesthetics to the film while overseeing the performance aspects.
Our producer, Julia Sy, ignites her creativity through songwriting and doing drag performances on the side. Born in the Philippines, she slowly fell in love with the beauty of film there and decided to pursue it further in Auckland. She is passionate about creating multicultural stories that continue to inspire her work today.
Our cinematographer, Sam Williams, holds a passion for the weird and wonderful in the film and art world. With a love of classic horror, the muppets and stop motion, any opportunity to make something strange, and they have the passion to make it special.
The Funding
While our film doesn’t require extreme set designs or elaborate equipment, there are still costs that need support to make this project possible. All donations go towards:
- Catering food for our crew & cast
- Providing Koha for our actors
- Materials for creating our sickening puppet blob
- Transportation allowance
- Electrical costs for the locations (it ain’t a party without lots of colourful lights!)
- Film festival submission fee
The Details
This project is our capstone short film for our final year in university, which challenges us to create our best work and tell a cherished, relatable story that connects with our audience. Our extended crew comprises highly skilled students from our degree and other universities, as well as aspiring industry professionals. Taking inspiration from cult classics like Little Shop of Horrors, this campy comedy-horror was co-written by Sam Williams and Athena Preston to bring back the vibrancy and silliness that is lacking in our current society. While we wished there had been a film like this during our adolescence, we wanted to create one for future generations, hoping to normalise the awkward phases of growing up and self-discovery. This short film delves into the inner voice that often sabotages your happiness and controls your life. We hope that by creating this short film, we’ll motivate audiences to have the freedom of self-expression without the fear of embarrassment.

The Impact
As members of the LGBTQIA+ community ourselves, we believe our sapphic short film is precisely what audiences need to reconnect with their youth. Highlighting the awkwardness of high school romance, and more specifically queer romance, we intend to show that you are not alone. Even if you are not queer-identifying, this is a universal story that we can all relate to. We want to follow in the footsteps of classic comedy-horror movies, as contemporary films often lack the absurdist and wacky elements of storytelling. We aim to create a film that not only has heart but also brings a scary and hilarious twist to the typical romance genre.
Your donations, no matter the amount, will be deeply appreciated and will directly go into bringing this film to life. Donating to our debut project supports a whole team of emerging creatives, giving us the motivation to continue working in this growing industry.
