The Project
More than the Cube is a creative documentary about highlighting the world of speedcubing. We will be exploring a variety of people from different backgrounds and ages who are subversively coming together to see who can solve the fastest. This documentary is more than just us; it's about shedding light on a niche community that deserves more praise and respect.
The Team
Director: Ashley Foster
Ashley Foster is the director of this documentary. As Ashley is a passionate Rubik's Cube solver and club organiser for years. He aims to share the competitive and social atmosphere of the speed cubing world with a wider audience. Through this film, Ashley hopes to inspire and give more recognition to the community.
Producer: Aaron Hope
As producer, Aaron works on the concept to completion, managing the budget and timetable while making sure everything aligns with the creative aspect of the documentary. He also helps with the interviews ahead of time by checking in with interviewees and overseeing the crew. Aaron will be there to be a helping hand towards his director and cinematographer before, during and after the shoot.
Cinematographer: Jongchan Chun
Jongchan Chun, the man who blends in amazing visuals with a sharp sense of storytelling, is here to ensure that you don't leave your seats within the first 15 seconds of the documentary. As a cinematographer, Jongchan's main goal is to approach each frame carefully, fulfilling the director's vision more than your accomplishments this year. Although immersing the audience into the warm world of speedcubing is essential, the passion and dedication turned at every corner hopes to ensure that this documentary is still seen in the years to come.

The Details
With our documentary, More than the Cube, we want to bring light on the strong sense of community that exists within the world of cubing. It's not all about the competition but instead the friendly connections and passion for cubing
We thought this would be a great idea for a documentary because our director, Ashley, runs Cubing competitions here in Auckland and from cubing for quite some time, he's had a different experience from what people may think goes down normally. Ashley has had friendships start from cubing, just from the overall fun and the number of times he's seen a reoccurring face at competitions. So with this documentary, that's what we wanna show, just the overall connection and fun someone can have with cubing.
The Impact
Through this documentary, we hope that we can showcase the competitive and social environment that speed cubing offers. As with the naming of "More Than The Cube", the name and documentary aim to communicate that the Rubik's Cube isn't just a puzzle but has formed a community and opportunities for many people. Any support we receive for this documentary will help ensure that More Than The Cube is produced to a high standard and help reach a wider audience.
