The Details
Mic Drop is adapted from the 2021 mockumentary short film “Drop The Mic” by dir. Marcus Savelio, Isabella Taouma, Kyan Alo and Tamasa Lavea. Originally set between a fictional high school rap feud between schools in Mt Albert and Kelston.
This story was given to Ayush, who, through close collaboration with Marcus, has transformed this into the freshest theatre experience, with elevated comedy, incorporated epic live rap battles and brash showmanship. Now brought all the way to the streets of Te Aro, Wellington. Strutting a cast of graduate year level actors from Toi Whakaari.
This production draws from all our personal experiences with rap in our upbringings. The influence of hip-hop culture right from the States to our own communities. We celebrate the way we’ve embraced what it means to drop the mic here in Aotearoa.
The Impact
Everyone involved with this project are new emerging artists. With a wide range of skill sets, most of the team are current students or graduates of Toi Whakaari, with the exception of three who are from Whitireia, Unitec and UoA. The opportunity this show presents will let these people perform skills they have learnt in their recent tuition and the chance to do it under real-life industry standard conditions while being paid a living wage.
By putting this show up in Fringe, we hope to create a platform for our communities in Aotearoa to see themselves reflected on stage and create a space that feels empowering and relevant to these communities, where future storytellers can see theatre as a practical medium for creative expression.
Your donation will make a massive difference in supporting young, up-and-coming artists. If you can, please donate! And if you can't, we'd still love you to join us at the debut of MIC DROP at Te Auaha from the 19th to the 22nd of February 2025!
