The Project
We are creating an art school dedicated to preserving the tradition of the old masters. Inspired by institutions like the Watts Atelier in California, our mission is to foster a new generation of artists. Through this crowdfunding campaign, we aim to build a space where tradition meets mentorship, equipping students with the skills and inspiration to not only make a living, but contribute to a rich legacy of masterful artists.
The Team
My business partner Blake and I are setting up in his space to foster a vibrant community of artists. Blake is an experienced bookshop and art gallery owner.
The Funding
High-quality stone head busts are essential for teaching classical techniques, but they come at a premium. Many are crafted in Europe using traditional methods, making them both rare and expensive. These busts provide an unparalleled reference for students to study form, light, and anatomy, offering a level of detail that cheaper alternatives.
The Details
Our art school is a mission-driven alternative to expensive boutique university programs that can leave students buried in debt, sometimes up to a quarter of a million dollars. We prioritize mastery of foundational art skills and classical techniques. By offering accessible, high-quality training, we aim to empower aspiring artists without the financial burden of boutique University degrees. For those striving for a career in fine art, we emphasize the timeless value of creating handmade oil paintings—an essential skill that connects artists to the rich tradition of the masters. By mastering these classical techniques alongside foundational art skills, students can confidently pursue success in fine art or the competitive entertainment industry job market.
The Impact
Supporting our art school means investing in the cultural enrichment of Dunedin. By fostering a space where aspiring artists can learn, create, and showcase their work, we aim to contribute to a thriving local arts scene. This school will not only attract talent and creativity but also inspire community engagement through exhibitions, workshops, and events. Together, we can make our town a hub for artistic growth and cultural vitality.
