The Project
MATERIA GUM is an uncanny short cosmic horror which tells the tale of an art critic, an art collector and a photographer who arrive at a mysterious gallery after being invited by an eccentric artist. It's the revealing of his first self portrait. As the evening progresses the three guests are soon witness to a cosmic spectacle that nothing or no-one could’ve prepared them for. And escape is not an option. We need your support to bring this project (and all of its creepy crawlies) to life! Thank you!!
The Team
Our team is made up of 3rd year Screen Arts students who are all making this film as a part of our major project.
At the forefront of our project are;
- Sonny Frizzell - Writer/Director
- Hannah Sutton - Producer
- Isla Crawford-Whitaker - Director of Photography
- Emily Mahoney - Head of Art Department and Practical Effects Artist
As well as an extended crew of incredibly talented & passionate young artists and filmmakers all so keen to keep the ball rolling on this project. And with support from people such as our composer Charlie Morton (Charmort), we are dedicated to making something truly special
The Funding
The Funding for this short is primarily aimed at supporting our crew and those who have worked hard to make this possible!
-Catering for our cast and crew, with a combined set of around 20 people we need to fuel our creatives on those long shoot days with yummy snacks and coffee.
-We also need to delegate costs towards paying our talented actors
-Providing the supplies for the talented and hardworking art department team who is working to create practical effects
-Transport of equipment, actors and crew to and from set
-Props and costuming costs
-Funds for film festival submissions
The Details
MATERIA GUM delves into the archetypes of the fine arts world and explores how far we as humans will go in the face of demise at the hands of the incomprehensible, and how far an artist may go for their own craft. This film is uncanny, reality has shifted for these characters. And their attempts to grasp their new reality causes what would be normal to become abnormal, subconsciously making caricatures of themselves. Only the artist knows the truth.
This film was born from a love of the horror genre between filmmakers and artists. The true heart of this project is artist Emily Mahoney, whose work inspired the practical approach towards the film and secured her position as head of special/practical effects. Through this we have found a desire to uphold traditional horror filmmaking techniques and create something that truly defines the genre. A goal for this project always was to create an open collaborative space across different creative mediums and with how we are going, and with your support, achieving this, and the rest of our goals, is absolutely possible.
The Impact
This film is a passion project in production led by a team of horror loving likeminded individuals hell-bent on creating a horror film the traditional way, the hardest way - with practical effects. We believe it’s important to uphold these fading techniques, and show that it's possible for them to maintain necessity, even in our increasingly digital age of filmmaking. To bring these sorts of things with us into the future is incredibly important. But latex is expensive and laborious and with your support we can create something truly special!
