Lunch time lei's are for me nostalgic, in that they are a beautiful memory and reminder of the adornment of photo frames and certificates I saw growing up, proudly hanging on the walls inside my home and those of our families and friends. Fa'amele Etuale's skill and expertise of lei making is mastered by her intimate memories of her late mother, sewing and collecting each piece of material as it manifests into a garland of elegance and beauty. Etuale's relationship with this memory brings about a workshop that is skillful, enjoyable and proudly Samoan. The workshop run by Etuale and the help of her siblings and children honours Pacific migration, Pacific diaspora and Pacific innovation. Her warm and charismatic nature allows all those who attend feel apart of her aiga (family).

Etuale doesn't just demonstrate a craft, she shares with you her knowledge and how sofisticated and complex Pacific craft can be, most importantly Etuale shares with you the alofa (love) she has with this art form. For me it was a honor to attend and be in her presence, I highly recommend as it is a workshop that celebrates culture and diversity.

I have applied for funding for this project and other projects and I have been declined and rejected many times.
