In Her Steps

The Project
OVERVIEW
'In Her Steps' conveys a relationship where both parties grow with each other, but one that isn't overly saturated on-screen or in the media. Our story strives to be authentic, relatable, personal, and to be able to connect with everyone. This isn't just about mothers and daughters, it's everyone who has a meaningful relationship in their life that encourages growth. 'In Her Steps' is driven by the characters and their relationship dynamic and we want to highlight the simple things that are often overlooked.
ABOUT US
The core team of 'In Her Steps' -- Emma, Kate, and Ashlee -- have made many short films, music videos, small documentary episodes, 48hr film festivals and passion projects throughout our years at Massey University and high school. We have an incredible team helping us to bring this to life and feel confident in the team of 'In Her Steps' to make something beautiful and impactful.
WHY?
We are basing most of our story off of interviews we held with mothers and daughters; friends, family, and our own mothers. We want this project to connect with the viewers by including those intimate, meaningful memories we hold close. We feel these raw relationships aren’t shown enough on screen and yet everyone has a relationship like this in their life that impacts them greatly.
OUR FILM
'In Her Steps' is split into three acts. The first act the daughter, Noah, is 5 years old and the mother, June, is in her 40s. In this first act we are going to show the struggles of first-time-parenting, the testing of boundaries, and the parental figure being a shelter to create that magical environment. The second act Noah is 16-18 and June in her 50s. This act is widely focussed on Noah gaining her independence as June struggles to support Noah, whilst giving her room to grow. In the third act Noah is in her 40s, now a mum herself to Bonnie (14yrs), and June is in her 70s. There is a large theme of achievement and contentment in this act. Noah and June's relationship has changed to become more even as they are both mothers, and feel closer to being friends.
These ages are prominent stages in our lives and we can show the raw relationship going through struggles, highs, lows, and how ultimately they come back together after everything.
