Project Updates

Meet our producer!

We're delighted to announce the latest member of our 'I Need a Battle' family - Robyn Jordaan.

Robyn is coming on board as our producer - and we couldn’t be more excited about it! With an extensive range of experience both on stage and behind the scenes, she is a creative force to get excited about.

Thank you so much to everyone who’s donated so far - your generosity has been truly humbling. We can’t wait to show you what we’re cooking up!

If you’d like to learn more about our new producer Robyn, check out her bio below.

Robyn Jordaan is a director, producer and choreographer based in Ōtautahi.

Her work navigates constrictions on the human experience; navigating trauma, grief and dancing with the surreal. Jordaan’s work has recently been screened in cinemas and featured in exhibitions, for example with her and Kyah Dove's directorial film, To Cut A Mermaid's Tongue (2022) and Inside the Vessel (2022). Jordaan has also produced and directed many projects, some of which include music videos for Riiki Reid, (‘Meet U Again’ - 2022) and Juno Is (‘The Highway Song’ music video - 2023)

As a performer, Jordaan’s work has taken her across Aotearoa (NZ), and Europe; performing in Germany and Iceland. Her past choreographic work includes Two Crones and a Desert (2022) at the Christchurch Town Hall, The Vision (2021) with Olivia McGregor at the Christchurch Art Gallery, as well as solo works: Otolith (2019) and Detta I (2019) at NES Art Residency in Iceland.

We've hit 42%!

Hello lovely humans,

Firstly, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your generous donations to our Boosted campaign so far. It’s tough times out there, so your support means more than I can express with words. We truly can’t make this visual album without people like you!

I wanted to update you with some exciting news. Our campaign is now sitting at 42%! This is amazing progress. However, as you may know, if we don’t reach 100% of our target then we don’t get to keep any of it...

So, I’m wondering if I can ask you for one more favour?

If you have the time and energy, could you give our Boosted campaign a wee push by sharing it with your friends and family? Maybe via social media, or directly via word of mouth? At this point the team and I have sent this project out to practically everybody we know - so any new folks we could reach would be hugely helpful!

Thank you so much again for your support. Looking forward to sharing some more updates with you very soon.

Lots of love,

Neil

Release Strategy

Hello lovely humans,

Something we haven’t touched on yet is our plans for the visual album after it’s made. I thought it’d be fun to share some of those ideas with you today.

As some of you may know, releasing a project is often just as hard - if not harder - than actually making it. There’s heaps to consider; who the audience is, how to reach them, where to host the project etc.

In terms of our audience, we believe that the visual album will be suitable for ages 14 and above. Our goal is to cast a wide net by showcasing the film in different formats, that appeal to different demographics.

On the digital front, we’ll be pitching the visual album to various streaming platforms, with the hope of licensing the material in as many territories as possible. If we are successful in this endeavor it would likely mean reaching a much larger audience than if we self-publish directly to YouTube or Vimeo.

On the physical front, we’re still hardcore believers in the cinema format. Our ambition is to tour the visual album across New Zealand, visiting boutique theatres for exclusive one-time-only screenings. The intention here is to make really meaningful connections with our audience, forging new relationships and creating opportunities to discuss the film and its meaning in the good old fashioned (in-person) way.

Lastly, we’ll be entering the visual album into as many film festival opportunities as possible. This will give us the opportunity to present directly to the film industry; introducing the project and our crew to local and international critics, production companies and cinephiles alike.

Hopefully, this has been an interesting insight into one of the many strings of consideration that’s going into ‘I Need a Battle’. If you feel we’ve missed something, or have other suggestions for how we can make sure this artwork gets the attention it deserves, please don’t hesitate to get in touch at neilmacleodmusicnz@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

Best,

Neil

We've hit 103%!!

Hello lovely humans,

I am delighted to be updating you this evening with the great news that our Boosted campaign has officially hit it's target! In fact, we're currently sitting at 103%!

This means that we get to keep your donations and put them towards paying and supporting our incredible crew!

It's been overwhelming receiving so much love and support for this project. It truly takes a village. We're humbled by your generosity and do not take it for granted.

Amazingly, we still have 27 hours left before our campaign ends, which gives us the unique opportunity to try and raise additional funds. So we've added a 'stretch goal'. Our hope is to raise a further $900 NZD which we can use to help with covering our post-production costs. So we'll see how that goes!

Thank you for believing in us. We can't wait to show you what's next.

Big love,

Neil

That's a wrap!

Well, as you may have noticed, our Boosted campaign has officially come to a close.

We hit our target with over 24 hours left on the clock… a result that none of us saw coming!

It’s been a big journey, and I want to thank everyone who’s supported the campaign. To those who gave their hard earned cash, or shared the campaign with their friends, family or social media networks, thank you so much. Without your collective generosity, making this film would’ve been impossible. We are immensely grateful for your support.

I’ve emailed all donors who supplied their contact details to thank them directly this morning. For those of you who gave anonymously, please know that I’d love to connect and thank you personally. If you’d like that, then please email me at neilmacleodmusicnz@gmail.com - there’s a few offerings for those who donated over $50, too - and I’d love to ensure that you’re included.

I will continue to post updates here on Boosted for as long as I can. However, a more sustainable and personal way to stay up to date with this project is to sign up to my mailing list via my website

Once again, thank you for all of your support. It means more than we know how to express.

Best,

Neil
