The Project
Ko Tessa Frazer tōku ingoa - I’m a classical saxophonist based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa New Zealand. I’ve recently been accepted to the Master of Music in classical music programme at Codarts, Rotterdam, where I’ll study under renowned saxophonist Femke IJlstra. This is an incredible opportunity to further my musical training and immerse myself in the European music scene. It has always been a dream for me to study in the Netherlands so I’m launching this campaign to help make this next step possible - and I would be truly grateful for your support.
The Team
I hold a First-Class Honours degree from Te Kōkī - New Zealand School of Music, where I studied under Reuben Chin and Simon Brew. My performance experience spans the country, and I’ve had the privilege of working with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Wellington, Auckland Philharmonia, Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band.
As a performer, I’m passionate about the classical saxophone and pushing the boundaries of what the instrument can be within the classical music world. I thrive on collaboration, chamber music, and contemporary repertoire - especially works that challenge tradition and reimagine the saxophone’s voice in new and exciting contexts.
Looking ahead, I want to build a future where I’m fully immersed in music: performing, teaching, commissioning new works, and being part of shaping what the next generation of classical saxophone looks like - in Aotearoa and beyond.
The Funding
This move across the world comes with significant costs. I’m currently working over 40 hours a week, applying for scholarships, and saving as much as possible. Your support will help cover: flights to the Netherlands, tuition costs at Codarts, and living costs in Rotterdam.
The Details
For years, it has been a dream of mine to study in the Netherlands - a country that has produced some of the most brilliant classical saxophonists in the world. Codarts, Rotterdam has a strong reputation for excellence in saxophone, and I’m incredibly honoured to have been accepted into the class of Femke IJlstra - a performer I’ve looked up to for years. Being able to learn directly from her, in a hub of musical innovation like Rotterdam, is an opportunity I could only have dreamed of - until now. This Master’s programme will allow me to continue growing as a saxophonist in every way: technically, artistically, and professionally. I’ll be immersed in an international environment that values collaboration and experimentation.
The Impact
I’m incredibly thankful for any support, no matter the size. This opportunity is a huge step toward achieving a dream I’ve had for a long time, and it wouldn’t be possible without the encouragement of my community here in Aotearoa. Whether you’re able to donate or share this campaign, thank you for being part of it.
