The Project

This kaupapa is a love letter to the city of Te Whanganui-A-Tara Wellington. A short film that showcases our stunning capital in all its ugly, wacky glory. On our main character Piri’s final night in Wellington, he must decide: is he one bad day away from leaving? Or one good night away from staying?

Over one night, we follow him on an odyssey-like journey through the city. This short film has music, dancing, homoerotic male friendships, and even a fist fight! The question is asked, after endless business closures, public service cuts, and weather emergencies, can Wellington live on?

Our kaupapa says yes. Our team, our project, asserts that you can never kill a place like Wellington. We are a city sustained through the audacity of our people

He aha te mea nui o te ao?

He Tāngata! He Tāngata! He Tāngata!

He karanga tēnei nā te tīma o 'He Tāngata' ki te marea whānui – kia tū, kia tautoko mai kia eke tātou ki te pae mutunga!

The Team

We are a team of Massey students passionate about creating a life-affirming short film that champions the city we’re so lucky to call home. We are united in this kaupapa, and hungry to tell this story.

The Details

This project is an answer to the endless barrage of governmental and media attacks on our awesome city. There is a popular narrative going around that somehow Wellington is “dying”. This film not only argues that it’s impossible for a city to “die”, it’s especially impossible for this city.

During our main character Piri’s journey, this script presents an unfiltered, joyous depiction of the iconic people and places in Wellington. While this film can’t directly be called a “true” story, it is grounded in its authenticity. Everything that happens in this film has happened to us at one point or another.

In front of and behind the camera, we will champion whanaungatanga. He Tāngata is a tribute to the way in which community can sustain a place when nothing else will.

The Impact

Your support will ensure a powerful artistic statement about the state of Aotearoa’s capitol city. As rangatahi artists we have a unique opportunity to make our voices heard, and contribute to the cultural conversation of the whenua and communities we occupy. Wellington will only die if we do nothing.

We want to start an optimistic korero that affirms what I believe many of us already know; the people of Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington are the future.
