Wellington Te Whanganui-a-Tara
The Project
Wellington Community Ballet Theatre is putting on its first show for NZ Fringe called “Four Questions” and needs to raise $550 to make it happen.
The Team
We are a new community theatre group dedicated to dancers and dance productions. The cast is made up of 30 adult dancers.
We are supported by four emerging choreographers:
- Callum Phipps
- Trinity Maydon
- Joana Joy
- Kate Avery
- And our mentor, Sacha Copland.
The Production Team:
- Our producer is Shereen Capper
- Verity Schommer is Production Manager
- Yulan Black is Rehearsal Stage Manager
- Alex Barton is Costume Designer
- Lucas Zaner is Sound and Lighting Designer
- Caitlin Bishop is Marketing Manager.
- Kate’s choreography features original music by Anna McBride.
The community group has been coming together three times a week to rehearse and create choreography. Each choreographer has chosen a question asked by a four-year-old to explore and is creating the choreography on the cast, specifically for this new Fringe production.
The Funding
Production costs for the show:
- Costumes ($300)
- Set and lighting ($300)
- Music licensing ($300)
The Details
“Four Questions” is a show inspired by the questions a four-year-old asks and the themes the questions brings up. We are exploring self-identity, gender and finding your place in the world. We’re exploring what’s real and what’s imaginary. We’re also exploring the heartache of parenthood and balancing work with play.
Each choreographer is creating one piece with the cast, focused on a question. The style of the show is ballet contemporary but each piece is quite distinctive in style and tone. Our community cast will perform over two nights on the 3rd and 4th March at the Hannah Playhouse as part of NZ Fringe Festival.
The Impact
Our project gives adult community dancers the opportunity to perform a full theatre work. It’s community theatre for people who love to dance!
We are also giving emerging choreographers a platform and supporting them as freelance artists. We are creating a work that will resonate with audience members and give them the opportunity to reflect on childhood and the important life questions that young children ask.
