The Project
Inspired by the sculpture of the same name, Ex Tenebris Lux (From Darkness, Light) draws upon the sculpture itself, original live music, movement and scripted narrative.
The story's central character, Mnemosyne - from the Greek goddess of memory - is a little bit supernatural, strong enough to live outdoors all year round but not invulnerable. When her son dies unexpectedly she finds herself with one foot in the land of the dead. She grieves, slowly reconstructs and returns to the land of the living.
The production reverses the idea of 'Tenebrae', a traditional Holy Week service leading up to the crucifixion, where all lights are gradually extinguished. In post-earthquake Christchurch Ex Tenebris Lux begins with a dark scenario and gradually turns the lights back on.
Our intention is that this performance address those who have been affected by a heavy emotional or major disruption to their lives. Our overall aim: to give voice to people who have been battered - in a way that is affirming of them and informing to those who haven't been through the same experience.
We have funding for the directorial team through Christchurch Creative Communities.
We also have support from The Body Festival of Dance and Performance who have accepted us as part of their festival. The Christchurch Art Gallery have generously provided access to Ex Tenebris Lux the sculpture.
We are now building the rest of our team - cast, musicians and crew. We are really excited to be performing this year. Thank-you for taking the time to view this page and we hope you will enjoy the journey to our target with us!
