The Project
'Ent Oshay La Peath' is a short, dramatic thriller written by a Māori acting student that explores themes of belonging, vulnerability, and manipulation. The story follows Annie, a writer who becomes concerned about her sister Christian after she becomes involved with a mysterious organisation that claims to support people in need. As Annie investigates further, she discovers the organisation is operating as a cult that targets vulnerable individuals, promising transformation and belonging in exchange for extreme sacrifice.
The story examines how people experiencing hardship, isolation, or financial instability can become vulnerable to exploitation by groups that present themselves as support systems. Through a tense and emotional narrative centred around family relationships, the work highlights the importance of community awareness and support.
The Team
This project is supported by Let’s Kiss Productions, a Māori-led film company created by Pānia and her two brothers, continuing a creative legacy passed down from their late mother. The company exists to support Māori storytelling and uplift Māori voices.
The film is directed by Charly Baker, with Mahana Dexter as Director of Photography, bringing a strong visual perspective to the work.
The project is produced by Chloe Marshall, a graduate of Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School. She is responsible for coordinating the production and supporting the team from development through to completion.
The project is also supported by the Eastbourne Community, who have generously offered local homes as filming locations.
Together, this team of emerging artists, industry professionals, and community supporters are bringing 'Ent Oshay La Peath' to life through collaboration, mentorship, and a shared commitment.
The Funding
Support through Boosted will enable the development and production of 'Ent Oshay La Peath' as a completed short film. The funding will contribute to key areas such as artist fees, equipment and technical resources, locations, and production logistics.
This support will allow the predominantly Māori creative team and emerging acting students to work within a professional production environment while collaborating with experienced industry practitioners. It will ensure that artists are supported fairly while allowing the project to be produced to a professional standard.
The Details
'Ent Oshay La Peath' will be produced as a short film, bringing together acting students and industry professionals in a collaborative environment focused on mentorship and shared learning.
The film is also female-led, both in its story and creative team. In an industry that often centres male perspectives, especially within thriller and suspense, this project aims to elevate female voices while supporting Māori creatives.
With a focus on strong performances, atmospheric visuals, and immersive sound design, the film will deliver a tense, character-driven story while providing valuable professional experience for emerging artists.
The Impact
'Ent Oshay La Peath' aims to create both artistic and professional impact. Artistically, the film explores themes of vulnerability, belonging, and manipulation, encouraging audiences to reflect on how individuals and communities can be influenced or exploited when seeking support or connection.
Professionally, the project creates meaningful opportunities for emerging acting students to work alongside industry professionals, helping to bridge the gap between training and professional practice. This mentorship environment supports skill development, collaboration, and the growth of new talent within the screen and performing arts industries.
The project also contributes to the visibility of Māori creatives and female-led storytelling, supporting voices that are still underrepresented in many areas of the film industry.
