The Project
This project is a wholesome short absurdist comedy about identity, resilience and belonging. It's vibrant, unique and brutally honest. Some of the inspirations include Eagle VS Shark; Everything Everywhere All at Once and Fleabag.

The Details
I wanted to tell a story about diversity without giving up on a creatively disobedient style.
The first concept originated from the idea of 'what if we represented someone's inner conflicts with costume changes that nobody else can see?', and it then was fleshed out into a drama disguised as absurdist comedy.
I love breaking conventions, vibrant visuals, dry dialogue and a realistic New Zealand setting.
The story:
𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘯𝘰 𝘰𝘯𝘦. Echo, a sweet and awkward 20 year old barista loses their job, the one thing that defined their identity. A bizarre journey in search of themselves, meeting unique people and morphing into caricatures, convinces them they don’t belong anywhere. But at the end of day they exist...In the night wind, after thoughts have gone to sleep, they do belong and they always have. This short absurdist comedy set in Wellington will take audiences on a vibrant emotional ride.
The Impact
Writing this project felt like desperately trying to make people laugh telling a sad story. ECHO is a fiction story but written to be simple and honest for New Zealanders to actually relate.
The main character is struggling with existential overthinking and at the same time is trying to cope with unemployment in Wellington.
I want people to see themselves or family in Echo, ride the emotional journey and leave with a smile.
As a creative practitioner my long term goal is to strengthen the sense of collective identity in the local arts circle. This short film aims to unite artists and acknowledges difficulties a lot of young people face after graduating, many of which would feel a lot less hard to overcome with a loving community around.
