The Project

Away With The Faeries is a Psychological Thriller with a vintage aesthetic inspired by the bloom and warmth of the 70’s Psychedelic era. The story follows Chris and Macy, a young couple on a camping trip. After accidentally ingesting magic mushrooms they find themselves in the depths of a psychedelic trip which threatens to make or break their relationship.

As Chris and Macy set up camp in the NZ bush, we can see the strain and tension on their relationship. When Chris goes off to find ingredients in the bush for dinner, he comes back with what he thinks are normal Porcini mushrooms. But after a big fight blows out and the characters go off to different parts of the bush they start to have visions of a fairy like nymph coming from the water, fire and all around them. They both learn things about themselves from this nymph and what ends in a violent and tragic event leads to the personal downfall for each these characters.

WHY?

Nature is at the heart of the story. Aside from The Native NZ bush being a large thematic and visual inspiration for the film it’s also the main idea behind the rationale. Specifically, the division between Man and Nature. The need for control.

Our two main characters’ dynamic represents this struggle for control. Chris needs to always be in control. He fears nature because he can’t control it. Macy’s life is controlled by Chris’ wishes and wants. They’re both woefully stranded in this life of servitude to society and slaves to other’s expectations. With the introduction of a psychedelic trip these barriers begin to break down. In essence, It’s a return to nature.

Portraying complex and realistic characters is also a main objective, Chris and Macy’s relationship has many deep seeded and woefully unaddressed issues. Each of them is at fault, but it’s important for us to show both the compassion and humor that makes them human.

As third year Massey Screen Art students, we want to use the skills and knowledge we have learnt over the past few years to create a project that we are proud of, represents our strengths well and something we can use in our portfolios to hopefully aid us in getting careers after our degree is complete.

We do however hope this film goes further than our portfolios and can be a part of the growing New Zealand film industry and that wouldn’t be possible without the help of all of you wonderful people. So a big, big thankyou to anyone who supports, donates or helps in any way over the making of this film.

YOUR SUPPORT:

Boosted uses an all or nothing system which means if we don't reach our target goal, we don't get any of it so anything big or small helps and is deeply appreciated.

Here’s what your donations will go towards:

  • Paying our wonderful and talented cast
  • We are filming out in the beautiful Masterton so we are wanting to transport our whole cast and crew out there for two shoot days
  • Feeding the team on set!
  • Props, Costuming and Makeup to create the 70s aesthetic and ensure the ever so terrifying nymph is actually terrifying
  • Distribution in film festivals so we can spread our film further then the student cohort and hopefully showcase it to a wider audience.
