Flare presents: Hurihanga
This Matariki, we will bring the outside of Christ Church Cathedral back to life through light, storytelling, and connection. Flare Ōtautahi Street Art Festival, will present Hurihanga, in collaboration with Ngāi Tahu artist Sam Emerson and Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Project, A large-scale projection artwork, Hurihanga, is woven with mātauranga Māori, ancestral stories, and the cycle of the year. A time to celebrate the efforts of growing, harvesting, and storing food for the long nights. During Matarki in Te Waipounamu, we look for a different star: Puaka. Also known as Rigel, it’s the brightest star in Tautoru (Orion’s Belt). In Māori mythology its appearance means Te Waka o Raki is rising to bring loved ones to their final resting place in the celestial kingdom. Matariki is a time to remember those who came before us, celebrate the present, and dream for the future. Hurihanga draws on this wairua — igniting a new energy in our city’s centre and symbolising hope, renewal, and reconnection to its very heart. This free public event will transform our Cathedral into a canvas of light, reactivating a site rich with history and significance.
