Crystal Chen
Tamaki Mākaurau-based Chinese-New Zealand singer, musician, and visual artist Crystal Chen, uses different mediums in her creative practice to reflect her perspective and reaction of the world around her through an honest and romantic lens. Having paved a path for herself since her first release in 2020, she’s been known for her soft and alluring songwriting abilities which explore themes of love, loss and fleeting memories.
Alongside her music, Crystal is currently working on a photography book with her mother who has Alzheimer's disease. Having just come back from traveling to the motherland China, the pair captured their experience in analog format, across 18 different cities. This book will be displayed as a mixed-media memoir with storytelling images of their mother-daughter relationship and Alzheimer's, whilst marking a significant time in Crystal’s journey as she discovers her roots.
Crystal is also working on her debut album to follow up after the release of her latest focus single ‘Love Letter’, her first release of 2024 which showcases an intoxicating melange of jazz, post-disco, R&B, and modern soul. This next phase kickstarts an exciting year for Crystal Chen, with forthcoming projects forecasted for her 2024.
