Hazel Phillips
I'm a Ruapehu-based writer and outdoors enthusiast. I've published four books, including Fire & Ice: Secrets, histories, treasures and mysteries of Tongariro National Park and Solo: Backcountry adventuring in Aotearoa New Zealand (MUP, 2022). I've recently finished writing my next book, Great Hearts: First Ladies of Aoraki Mount Cook. I'm usually found somewhere near a mountain or a lake, and I'm passionate about bringing the history of our wilderness spaces to life through storytelling and contemporary narratives. In 2022 I completed a Masters in Creative Writing with first-class honours, with a creative thesis that explored fundamentalism and rigid thinking. In my spare time I love multiday tramping, skiing, ski touring, mountaineering, scuba diving and stamp collecting (I have made up one of these things). My writing pursuits have so far caused me to wear out eight keys on my laptop keyboard
