Oliver Spalter
Born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, 18 year old Oliver is preparing to begin his undergraduate degree at Northwestern University, a prestigious institution located in Illinois, under the tutelage of esteemed pedagogue Andrew Raciti. Oliver first picked up the bass in 2019, and has since won the principal bass position of the Auckland Youth Orchestra, and the National Youth Orchestra where he performed the solo from Mahler's 1st symphony. Regularly playing for the Manakau Symphony Orchestra, of which he won their scholarship two years in a row, the Opus Orchestra and many more ensembles throughout New Zealand, Oliver has recently been given the opportunity to perform with the Auckland Philharmonia as a sub in a professional capacity. An active and enthusiastic soloist, Oliver performed the first movement of Bottesini's concerto no.2 with the NZSO as part of their young soloist showcase, and previously placed in the finals of the Auckland Youth Orchestra Competition two years in a row. Oliver is a current student of John Mietus and Gordon Hill, and has participated in masterclasses and private tuition with world renowned teachers including Paul Ellison, Dominik Wagner, Phoebe Russell, Thomas Martin and Alex Henry.
